HILARY WRITES ABOUT THE INTERSECTIONS OF WOMANHOOD AND SPIRITUALITY.

I Am From

I am from thick pile carpets

and grapevine swings,

spaceheaters and old Buicks,

backseat no seatbelt.

I am from just around the way,

down the street next to the old United Dairy Farmers.

I am from "be careful", and "you can do anything you set your mind to".

I am from Mary's porch swing stories, sipping tea

and daydreaming about her shoe factory job

and the time she dyed a billy goat purple with berries.

I am from feminine strength, from hard work, from pick yourself up,

from the last button on Gabriel's coat, and hope.
